THIS IS HOW 'AN OPEN DOOR' FIRST BECAME AWARE OF THE STREET CHILD'S DESPERATE NEEDS ON THEIR FIRST TRIP TO UGANDA IN JULY 1996
The Team's broken hearts led to the wonderful work that An Open Door has accomplished with taking children off the streets since November 1996
All the photographs are taken by 'An Open Door' staff
Some of An Open Door's accomplishments to date
These young people were on the streets as young children when we took them in
Richard came, as a baby from Rwanda with his mum. She died when he was 5 and he was left to survive a street-childs life. Older street boys helping him at that time saved his life
On the right is Abu playing football. Before he left Uganda he was playing for the 2nd team in the Ugandan Premiership!
Abu is one of our oldest children, he was helped off the streets at the age of 10. He is one of the most responsible people you could wish to meet. We are all so proud of his achievements, he is currently taking a degree in engineering in the UK.
A UK couple have stood with Abu for years in sponsorship. They were willing to take on an older child who needed a chance, and have had the thrill of seeing him come to the UK and be a part of his life here. How wonderful to see your sponsored child grow up and fulfill his dreams, and be able to visit you and you visit him! These three have developed an amazing relationship.
The Sad Reality of an Abandoned Child
This is An Open Door's Children's Family Home just outside Kampala
Some of the children 'An Open Door' takes off the streets are addicted to aviation fuel
For some it's already taken a big effect and it's not easy to give them a better education or allow them an opportunity to learn a career. But, thankfully most are caught in time, and they're so grateful to have the chance of a better life and a good education and someone to love and care for them. 'An Open Door's' Social Worker always tries to find the child's family and the reasons they ran away from home in the first place. Then many visits are made with the hope of resettling the child. Many times this is extremely successful. Some children and abandoned babies have been successfully adopted in loving homes within Uganda and in the UK. {But please note 'An Open Door' is not a registered adoption agency in the UK}.
For those who remain with 'An Open Door' in our Family Homes, we love them, care for and educate them, and try to prepare them for work. Some have already gone through University, many have passed through vocational training, we are proud of every child's every achievement.
'An Open Door' tries to find the parents or a parent of every abandoned baby who comes into its care. But with the largest percentage of the babies it's an impossible task. 'An Open Door' works with the local agencies that also do their utmost to find the natural families. Some of our babies are fortunate enough to find excellent loving adoptive parents within Uganda. Our Social Workers do an amazing job!
For the largest part the babies come to 'An Open Door' in terrible conditions. 'An Open Door' has to thank God and the local hospitals for their help and advice with these little ones. So many have been saved from the brink of death. Without the help of 'An Open Door' supporters all this would be impossible.
As I was the founder and the International Director of 'An Open Door' for seventeen years, I want to continue to support this wonderful work. Therefore, I have compiled some information, memories and photographs that may aid anyone browsing to understand the reasons for the Charity's focus. Please understand this Charity is born out of a genuine concern for the child on the streets and from the generous giving of its supporters, who, in the beginning were mainly the school staff and children of South Wales. I hope you have enjoyed reading.
